founded in 2014 to meet a growing need in progressive organizing —
Base Builder develops field programs that invest in people, operate with care, and deliver results at scale. We come from decades of door-to-door canvassing — an organizing tradition that began in the 1970s and evolved through environmental, labor, women’s rights, and electoral movements.
That lineage taught us a simple truth: canvassing isn’t just about doors — it’s about leadership, strategy, and movement-building.
Filling Critical Gaps
Base Builder emerged after years of national field leadership across issue advocacy and elections, with a clear purpose: to build durable infrastructure that campaigns could rely on. Early work focused on environmental fundraising and membership, quickly expanding into electoral programs, ballot access, and multi-state operations.
Along the way, we identified another critical gap — payroll and administrative systems built specifically for field campaigns. We found that many organizations didn't have the administrative infrastructure to run their canvasses, hire their staff, and manage their own teams. What started as a small solution became a nationwide payroll and HR operation supporting progressive organizations with accuracy, compliance, and care.
Committed to Evolving
From 2018 onward, Base Builder continued to evolve — scaling paid canvassing, launching large-scale phone programs, adapting to remote operations during COVID, and developing recruitment systems rooted in values and accountability.
Across every phase, our commitment has remained the same: develop people, meet real needs, and build systems that help movements win.
